How I Said Goodbye: A Personal Story of My Pet’s Last Gift
"I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I don’t think anyone ever is."
Grief doesn’t come with a manual. But love does leave us with stories—and this is mine. This is the story of Sammie, my Border Collie, and the last gift she gave me that changed my life forever.
Everything began with Sammie—my beloved Border Collie.
In 2018, I faced a devastating blow in my life. It was the kind of event that pulls the ground out from under you. My career as a designer, something I had poured my heart into, came to an abrupt halt. I was lost, directionless, and struggling to find a reason to move forward.
So I left everything behind.
With just a backpack and Sammie by my side, I set out on a journey—3,000 kilometers across the country, nearly a full year on the road. It wasn’t just a physical journey, but an emotional pilgrimage through grief, healing, and rediscovery. And through it all, Sammie was there.
She kept me warm when the nights were cold. She barked me awake when I veered too close to danger. And on the days when I felt like breaking down entirely, she grounded me. Her presence pulled me back from the edge more times than I can count.
When the journey ended, I slowly began rebuilding my life. Piece by piece, I returned to something resembling peace. Sammie aged gently beside me, her muzzle turning gray, her eyes growing softer with time. I thought we still had more time. I wasn’t ready.
But life doesn’t wait until we’re ready.
Sammie passed away suddenly from a heart attack. There was no warning. One moment she was lying beside me, and the next—she was gone. In my grief, I had to take care of the practical things no one ever wants to think about. I held her one last time, and then… she was reduced to ashes.
I placed her remains into a cold, temporary container I’d bought in haste. It felt wrong—so painfully wrong. Sammie, who had carried me through the darkest parts of my life, was now in a hard, impersonal jar. It broke my heart all over again.
That moment left a scar I still carry. But it also planted a seed.
That experience—the sorrow, the love, the regret—became the reason I created WhiskerGlaze Studio. I wanted to design something better. Something beautiful, personal, and warm. Something worthy of the love our pets give us so freely. A place not just to hold their ashes, but to hold their memory.
My hope is that through these handcrafted urns, other pet lovers will find a small light in their darkest moment. That they’ll be able to say goodbye with a little more tenderness, a little more peace. That they’ll be reminded to prepare—not out of fear, but out of love.
This is the heart of my brand.
This is Sammie’s last gift to me.
And I hope, in some small way, it becomes a gift to you too.
Sammie’s love carried me through some of the hardest years of my life. And now, through the pieces I create, her love continues.
💫 If you’re grieving, preparing, or simply remembering, I hope what we make at WhiskerGlaze Studio brings you a moment of peace.
